Great Villanova Moments at the NCAA Championships: #2

June 4-5, 1999: Carrie Tollefson Captures 3000-5000 Double

On June 4 and June 5, 1999 Carrie Tollefson executed a rare 3000-5000 double at the NCAA championship meet in Boise, Idaho, winning two NCAA titles in a 24 hour period. Her performance landed her on the cover of Track & Field News. In the 3000 meters, Tollefson defeated Kara Goucher (then Kara Wheeler), Julie Stamps, and Jenelle Deatherage, among others. She came back the next day and won the 5000, over such names as Katie McGregor and Amy Yoder. Tollefson Wins Fourth Career National Championship

Carrie Tollefson won her second title of the 1999 NCAA Outdoor Championships

June 6, 1999

Boise, Idaho--- On Saturday, June 5, at the 1999 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho, Villanova University senior Carrie Tollefson (Dawson, Minn./ Dawson High School) won her second National Championship of the meet and fourth career NCAA crown, by taking the title in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 16:09.51. Tollefson's time was a personal best and established a new Bronco Stadium record. With a title in the 5,000m on Saturday, she becomes the first Wildcat female ever to win NCAA titles in both the 3,000m and the 5,000m in the same outdoor season.

Tollefson stayed with the pack for most of the race on Saturday evening, before taking the lead with about 600 meters to go and opening up the lead in the last 400 meters. Leigh Daniel of Texas Tech finished in second place with a time of 16:12.72, while Katie McGregor of Michigan placed third in 16:15.75.

"I came to Boise looking to win one gold and I came away with two golds," said Tollefson. "I am really excited about winning both the 3,000 and 5,000 meters. I feel very fortunate to have been able to run so well all week long. It was a great week, and the fans in Boise were a great group to run in front of."

In addition to titles in the 3,000 and 5,000m at these 1999 NCAA Outdoor Championships, Tollefson also won titles at the 1997 NCAA Cross Country Championships and in the 3,000m at the 1999 NCAA Indoor Championships. With her victory in the 5,000m on Saturday, she became the 14th Villanova women to capture an outdoor national championship and the fourth Wildcat female to win an NCAA title in the outdoor 5,000m. Tollefson is now a ten-time All-American.

Competing in the finals of the 1,500m on Saturday, Villanova junior Carmen Douma (Cambridge, Ontario/ Woodland Christian High School) finished in sixth place with a time of 4:24.59. With her sixth place finish, Douma becomes a five-time All-American.

Great Villanova Moments at the NCAA Championships: #1

June 21, 1969: Marty Liquori Defeats Jim Ryun for NCAA Mile Championship

At the Tom Black Track in Knoxville, Tennessee, Villanova's Marty Liquori won the first of his three consecutive NCAA outdoor mile championships. The 1969 amd 1971 victories set NCAA championship meet records. The 1969 race was a showdown between the reigning Olympic silver medallist and world record holder Jim Ryun of the University of Kansas, and Villanova's Marty Liquori, an Olympic finalist at Mexico City in 1968. Ryun had run 3:51.1 in Bakersfield, California on June 23, 1967, breaking his own year-old world record. He had beaten Liquori in a photo finish at the NCAA indoor meet earlier in 1969 in Detroit and Liquori was still looking for his first victory over Ryun.

In the 1969 race in Knoxville, Liquori beat Ryun handily (see photo above) and Villanova's Frank Murphy was third, giving Villanova 16 points and helping the 'Cats win the 1969 NCAA team title. Here are the complete results for the race:

1969 NCAA Mile Finals
1. Marty Liquori Villanova University 3:57.7 10
2. Jim Ryun University of Kansas 3:59.3 8
3. Frank Murphy Villanova University 3:59.8 6
4. Chuck LaBenz Arizona State University 4:00.5 4
5. Howell Michael College of William & Mary 4:01.4 2
6. Bill Smart University of Washington 4:02.1 1
7. Chris Mason Villanova University 4:02.8
8. John Kerr Ball State University 4:05.9
9. Dickie Kleier University of Tennessee 4:10.3
10. David Glanz University of Missouri NT
11. Brian Kivlan Manhattan College NT
12. Elliott Evans Drake University NT

Here is how Track & Field News described the race in its July 1969 issue:

Everyone expected Jim Ryun to win as usual, for he had gone four seasons without a mile loss. Only 19-year-old Martin Liquori was given any chance, and Liquori himself did not expect to win. He had an intestinal virus six days before, and for two weeks he had cut his workouts by two-thirds because of a sprained ligament at the rear of his arch. He said, "I didn't think I would do any good."

Liquori's coach at Villanova, Jumbo Elliott, instructed Liquori to get ahead of Ryun before Ryun made his move and try to stay ahead, for it has many years since anybody beat Ryun from behind.

With Ryun running near the rear, Liquori had to be ahead of him on the first lap. After Chuck LaBenz led the pack around in 60.5, Ryun moved up on the second lap, running outside two runners on the second turn. Behind LaBenz in 2:02.8 came Brian Kivlan of Manhattan, Liquori and Frank Murphy of Villanova, and Ryun.

Again Ryun ran wide, outside Murphy, and he followed Liquori around the second curve. Liquori moved faster, passing the 1320 in 3:03.5 with Ryun on his shoulder. Down the last backstretch, Liquori poured it on. "I expected him to pass me any minute. I kept waiting for him." But while he was waiting, Liquori was running with speed and grace, and Ryun was running hard to stay with him. Into the homestretch, with the field now 10 yards behind them, Ryun was on Liquori's shoulder and everyone expected him to win. He tried hard, but "that last 100-yards for me was rugged."

But Liquori maintained his beautiful drive, and with 30-yards to go Ryun dropped back. Immediately, Liquori reacted with a pleasure never seen while a race was still on. He grinned. He looked at the sky. He shouted for joy. He waved his fists. His last lap of 54.2 gave him victory in 3:57.7, a new meet record. Ryun slowed to a jog at the finish, 1.6 seconds behind, and only half a second ahead of Murphy. He said of Liquori, "He ran a fine race."

Ryun made no excuses for losing, athough after his trial on Thursday he had mentioned the humid heat and his reaction to a vaccination. His coach, Bob Timmons, thinks the problem of having to come back in the three-mile [Ryun DNF'd in the three mile -- BC] had something to do with it. Also, Ryun gave away 10- to 15-yards by running wide. At any rate, he is apparently not in the condition he was two years ago when he could run the last lap at this pace in 52 seconds or faster.

Liquori said, "I just went into this race to warm up for the AAU meet [where he defeated Ryun again -- BC]. I had doubts abiout finishing. I figured whatever happens, happens."

Off to Nationals for Reid (x 2), Mimic, Ward & Gibney

Four Villanova runners qualified for the NCAA national championship meet at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa (June 8-11).

Sheila Reid qualified in two events. She won her 1500 meter heat in the fastest time of the day, running her second-best time of the season in 4:16.81. Reid earned all-american status in the 1500 at last year's national championships, finishing 4th in the finals. Reid also qualified today for the national meet at 5000 meters. She finished 4th in her heat, in 16:17.77.

Joining Reid in the 5000 meter competition in Des Moines will be Bogdana Mimic. Mimic, like Reid, is going to second straight national meet, and the two women finished together in the 5000 race today. Mimic was 5th in the same heat at Reid, in 16:17.96 -- a fifth of a second behind her teammate. The top 5 finishers in each of two heats automatically qualified for nationals; the next two fastest non-auto qualifiers also will go to nationals.

Finally on the women's side, Shericka Ward finished third in her 100 meter hurdles heat in 13:19, gaining an automatic qualifier for nationals. Ward also returns to the national meet for the second straight year.

The sole male representative for Villanova at the national meet will be Matt Gibney. Unleashing his patented kick off a slow pace, Gibney won heat #1 in the 1500 meters today in 3:46.29. His was the fastest 1500 time of the day across two heats. Gibney made nationals in 2009, earning all-american status by finishing 5th in that meet. He red-shirted during the 2010 outdoor season, recovering from injury.

Hugo Beamish and Mathew Mildenhall came up just short of qualifying in the 5000 meters. The top 12 finishers are guaranteed a spot at nationals, and Beamish and Mildenhall finished 13th and 15th, respectively. The final qualifier in the 5000 meters ran 14:08.43 -- Beamish was next at 14:10.09 and Mildenhall was a second slower, running 14:11.16.

Others who competed today in the up-or-out day of the East Regional were Emily Lipari, who finished 22nd (4:33.30) in the women's 1500 meters, Brian Tetreault, who was 24th (3:59.73) in the men's 1500 meters, Ali Smith, who finished 25th (16:54.69) in the 5000 meters, and Brian Long, whose 14:29.87 was good for 23rd in the men's 5000 meters. The women's 4x400 meters relay tandem of Kristen Mahon, Shericka Ward, Christie Verdier, and Jessona McDonald finished 19th in 3:40.17.

Day 2 of NCAA East Regional Eliminates 4 Cats -- 13 Still Alive for Decisive Saturday Races

Friday at the NCAA East Regional saw one Villanovan advance to the decisive Saturday races, but three others were eliminated from the competition.

Shericka Ward finished 2nd in heat #4 of the 100 meter hurdles preliminaries, running 13.40. She automatically qualified for Saturday's races (3 heats of 8 runners each), which will produce the 12 athletes (top 3 in each heat, plus next 3 fastest) to make Nationals in the event.

Eliminated on Friday were Ariann Neutts (2:10.15 -- 8th in heat #2 of the 800 meters), Sarah Morrison (11:03.38 -- 41st in the 3000 meter steeplechase), Nicoy Hines (52.35 -- 7th in heat #1 in the 400 meter hurdles), and Audrey Gariepy-Bogui (5'-10" -- 13th in the high jump).

The 13 Villanova athletes still with a chance on Saturday to qualify for the National meet at Drake are:

* Shericka Ward: 100 meter hurdles + 4x400 meter relay (heat #3)
* Sheila Reid: 1500 meters (heat #2) + 5000 meters (heat #1)

Six Advance, Four Ousted on Day 1 of NCAA East Regional

Three Villanova men and three women advanced out of the preliminary heats today at Indiana University, host of the NCAA East Regional.

Villanova qualified a pair of 1500 meter runners each on the men's and women's side. For the men, Matt Gibney finished 2nd in his heat in 3:48.45, while Brian Tetreault was 5th in his heat in 3:49.06. For the women, Sheila Reid and Emily Lipari were both in heat #5. Reid won the heat in 4:22.43, while Lipari was 5th in 4:23.47. All four advance to the semifinals on Saturday. Kelly McElroy failed to advance in the 1500, coming 11th in heat #3 in 4:39.07.

The fifth Villanovan to advance was Ariann Neutts, who ran 2:08.06 in heat #2 of the 800 meters, where she finished fourth. Her semi-final will take place Friday.

Finally, Nicoy Hines ran 52.27 to finish 3rd in his 400 meter hurdles heat, qualifying him for the semifinals on Friday.

Senior Amanda Marino (right) was the fastest non-qualifier in the women's 10,000 meters. Marino ran 33:57.75 and finished 13th in a race where the top 12 advance to the national meet. It was the final race in a Villanova singlet for the six-time All-American standout from New Jersey. Similarly, senior Keith Capecci, the Big East runner-up at the distance, ran 29:51.43 to finish 22nd in the 48-man field of the 10,000 meters.

Finally, Ashlynn Llerandi, Villanova's school record holder in the pole vault, no heighted today, failing three times to clear the opening 3.70 meter bar.

On the schedule for Friday:

* Shericka Ward in heat #4 of the 100 meter hurdles preliminaries
* Ariann Neutts in heat #2 of the 800 meter semifinals
* Sarah Morrison in heat #3 of the 3000 meter steeplechase preliminaries

Sheila Reid Named Villanova Female Student-Athlete of the Year

Karalunas, Reid Named Villanova Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year

Duo receives prestigious honors at Senior Student-Athlete Banquet

May 24, 2011

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova University Athletic Department announced the 2011 Senior Student-Athletes of the Year at the annual Senior Student-Athlete Banquet held on May 17th, 2011. Men's Lacrosse standout Brian Karalunas (Dewitt, N.Y.) and Sheila Reid (Newmarket, Ont.) of cross country and track & field teams were honored as the Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year.

Karalunas finishes his career as the most decorated men's lacrosse student-athlete in program history. He is Villanova's first three-time USILA All-American and garnered back-to-back BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2010 and 2011. On the field, the two-time captain finished his senior season with 74 ground balls and 70 caused turnovers, leading the NCAA averaging 4.38 takeaways per game. He also led in the same category during the 2010 season.

Karalunas' career numbers are even more impressive. He is Villanova and the NCAA's career leader in caused turnovers (153) and ranks ninth all-time at VU with 213 ground balls. During his four years with the team, Karalunas led the Wildcats to their first two NCAA postseason appearances in program history during the 2009 and 2011 seasons and helped Villanova reach their highest ranking at No. 7 in the USILA Coaches poll in 2011. Last weekend, the long-stick midfielder earned his first start in the professional lacrosse ranks with the Long Island Lizards, posting six takeaways in his first start with Major League Lacrosse.

In the classroom, Karalunas graduates Villanova with a 3.94 GPA and a degree in Honors and Philosophy from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. In 2010-11, Karalunas was named the American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award Winner. He is also a current finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award presented to the nation's most outstanding men's lacrosse student-athlete.

Reid is a 7-time All-American and two-time national champion with equally impressive academic accolades. During the cross country season last fall she won the individual national title while leading Villanova to its second consecutive team championship and also registered a perfect 4.0 grade-point average for the fall semester. Reid was the winner of the cross country Honda Award and was also named by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as both its National Athlete of the Year and National Student-Athlete of the Year for her athletic and academic accomplishments. She was also chosen as the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Performer of the Year for cross country.

When the calendar turned to the indoor track season Reid continued her remarkable year by anchoring the Wildcats national champion distance medley relay squad and also earning All-America honors in the 3000 meters for the second straight year. During the outdoor track season Reid won individual titles in the 1500 meters and the 5000 meters at the BIG EAST Championships and is now an 11-time conference champion. Reid graduated earlier this month with a cumulative 3.41 GPA as an English major. She will continue her season at the NCAA East Regional and NCAA Championships and returns to Villanova next year with eligibility in both cross country and outdoor track.

The Senior Student-Athlete of the Year is given to the top male and female Villanova student-athlete who excel in athletics, academics and community service. The winner must have at least a 3.2 GPA, in addition to being a significant contributor to his/her team.

Sam McEntee Sets Western Australian U-20 1500 Meters Record

Thanks to our friends at Runner's Tribe, here is an interview with Villanova freshman Sam McEntee (bib 1525 above), who hails from Perth in Western Australia. The interview was held in response to Sam breaking the 50+ year Western Australian U-20 1500 meter record with his 3:43.34 at the Tuppeny Last Chance meet at Swarthmore on May 14th. The previous record of 3:45 was held by the legendary Herb Elliott, also of Perth. Elliott went on to win two Commonwealth Games Gold medals in 1958 and the Olympic Gold medal in Rome 1960 (i.e., replacing Villanova's Ron Delany, who won the race in 1956 for Ireland, as Olympic champion at that distance), setting a world record in 3:35.6.

It has been held for 52 years but finally Herb Elliott’s Western Australian Under 20 1500m record has finally been broken by promising junior Sam McEntee. McEntee who is currently on scholarship with Villanova University in the United States went into the race with a life time best of 3.47.67 and came out with a huge personal best of 3.43.34 but more importantly taking 1.66 seconds off the Elliott record of 3.45.0.

Runnerstribe speaks to Sam McEntee about breaking the record and racing in the college system

RT: First of all, congratulations on breaking the record, as well as setting a big personal best. How did the race feel?

Sam: The race felt great, I was given some good advice to just settle in and take whatever position I got as we knew it was going to be a fast race. From there I gradually moved through the field, with 300 to go I guess I was a bit excited and probably kicked a tad early, but overall the race was great finishing tied for 3rd and a 4 second PB I couldn’t have asked for much more.

RT: Did you think you could break the record going into the race?

Sam: Before I left home in January my coach at the time Gareth Elliott had mentioned the possibility of breaking this record and being in the US where no one really knows too much about the history of running in Australia or even which side of the country Perth is on, it was something I kept to myself on the side. In the week leading up I had it in mind that this was probably going to be the last chance to have a crack at the record so I definitely felt like it was possible. Although my body was a bit sore from a quick workout the previous week and I really just wanted to run the race and get it over and done with. Going into the race you don't want to be focusing on any exact times and what not as it can sometimes mess you around but the way practice had been going I definitely felt as though I had it in me to run well.

RT: How does it feel to break a record, from such a legend of the sport in Herb Elliott?

Sam
: It’s pretty unbelievable to be honest; it’s an honor to even be mentioned in the same sentence as someone of his caliber. He is a legend of distance running and someone to aspire to be like. Obviously the technological advances over the past 50 years have helped my cause a lot.

RT: According to the Runnerstribe Stats Central a time like this would put you inside the top 10 on the All-time Australian Junior list for 1500m slightly ahead Craig Mottram. Mixing with that caliber of athletes, do you now have to realistically think about making Australian teams in the future?

Sam: I managed to take a quick look at the ranking list a few days ago and the thought of my name being up there with the athletes on that list is quite surreal. At the moment I’m in my first year at Villanova and having red shirted this outdoor season I still have the possibility of 4 years of Collegiate running ahead of me. Obviously it’s every runners dream to represent their country at the highest level but currently I’m pretty focused on just being a part of the team here at Villanova and achieving as much as I can on the NCAA scene.

RT: You are competing with Villanova University in the United States, how have you found the transition compared to racing in Western Australia?

Sam: The level of competition is slightly better, but the biggest difference is the depth over here, running 3:47 a few weeks ago you’d bank on getting a start in the heats at Nationals back home, but a 3:47 wouldn’t even get you in the top 100 kids in the NCAA so you really have to step it up if you want to match it with these guys. Fast races back home were like a time trial and every Friday night it was basically hang on for as long as you could and hope you ran a PB. Now for example, the race this past weekend was fast, but at the bell lap there were at least 6 or 7 people who were gunning to win that race.

RT: Has your training varied much? And what has been the biggest change?

Sam
: In the couple of months before arriving in the US I was running about 60-70km a week with 2 workouts. Now I usually get 80-85km a week and still have 2 workouts a week so my mileage has increased. The variation in my workouts has been the biggest change I feel, back home I was a pretty low mileage guy and my workouts were mainly hard hitting lactic session’s usually fast repeats with substantial rest one day and longer reps and a more aerobic workout the for the other workout. Now the workouts might start with a threshold mile and then the core part of the workout will be slightly more aerobic based than back home with short rest or jog recovery and are somewhat less taxing on the body which is really noticeable. They seem to involve several different methods of practice and target the anaerobic and aerobic systems in the one workout. Tempo runs weren’t something I had ever really done back home and now pulling on a heart rate monitor and running at rate for 5 miles isn’t out of the ordinary for a workout.

RT: We always hear about College teams and their team atmosphere. Can you give us an idea what it has been like for you?

Sam: It’s definitely a lot of fun; long runs on Sunday mornings are probably one of my favorite runs of the week simply because of the number of people you get to run with. We’ve got a pretty big distance squad so there’s always someone to run with or even just hang out on a daily basis. Honestly it’s pretty similar to a footy team which makes training something to look forward to every day. Being a foreigner and heavily outnumbered at that you cop a bit for the accent and what not but it’s all pretty harmless.

RT: You also have another Australian in the team Matt Gibney and a couple of New Zealanders, how have they helped settle in?

Sam
: Coming over it was going to be tough leaving home and not knowing anyone here in the US, so to have some older guys who had been through it all it really helped. Matt and the Kiwis are all top blokes and have always been there to help out, at the same time they are all really focused and committed to the sport and the team so they’re also someone to look up too.

RT: 2009-2010 was a massive breakthrough season where you dropped your 1500m time from 4:06 to 3.48. What do you think was the main reason for this?

Sam: Definitely having a bigger winter base and a reasonable cross season under my belt helped a lot. At the beginning of 2010 I made the tough decision to call it quits on football which wasn’t easy as I had played for my whole childhood. Without football I had more time for running and it also relieved a lot of stress from the body. Gareth really made sure that we didn't over do it and pump up the miles to early this enabled me to stay fresh and feeling good for what was a pretty long track season. I remember talking with Gareth early in the season and setting reasonable and realistic goals to break 4 minutes in the 1500. I think I had achieved this in the second race for the season so it gave me a real boost of confidence and hunger at the time. Momentum in any sport especially running is a huge factor and when you’re training and racing well it make things a lot easier.

RT: So how many kilometers were you doing prior to giving up football? And how many kilometers per week are you doing now?

Sam: In high school I was probably only running around 40km a week with 2 workouts and a race during the track season, this was reasonable, but the big change was being able to focus on just one sport. Last winter I was solely focused on running and instead of having footy training 2-3 times a week I was running. Now, apart from the few weeks I missed during March with a minor injury, I’ve been hitting 50miles (80km) consistently. In the scheme of things this isn’t a massive total but I feel compared to what I was doing combined with the consistency has really benefited my running.

RT
: We saw a bit of coverage of the Penn Relays with the Australian DMR team and Villanova winning the College DMR section, but unfortunately you missed out on a run. Can you give us an idea of the Penn Relays experience?

Sam: I didn’t have too much of an idea of what the relays were until a few weeks leading up. Although every day walking down to the locker room you see the corridors covered in Penn Relays wheels and Marcus O’Sullivan (Villanova coach) really emphasizes the significance of the relays to himself and Villanova University. Just missing out on a chance to run in the mile relay was disappointing but seeing Matt Gibney run a massive anchor leg and the team winning the DMR has definitely made me hungry for success at Penn relays in years to come. The atmosphere and size of the crowd was something I’ve never experienced for a track meet before so that alone was awesome.

RT: What is coming up for you over the next few months?

Sam: I’ll be staying at Villanova until July for summer school and to keep training with the guys whose seasons are still going; there might be another race if the body is holding up well. After that I’ll be heading home for the rest of the summer break (Aussie winter) to catch up with friends and family and get some good base training in before the start of the 2011 Cross Country season which is something I’m really excited for.

RT: What are some of your goals you want to achieve over the next few years?

Sam: To me the individuality of running is something I enjoy as it is solely on you and in your own hands to improve. So basically my goals are to just keep running PBs and to learn the art of racing. Earning a spot on the Cross Country team in the coming season is definitely one of my short term goals. After that I haven’t really thought of too much of specific results but the NCAA Track and Cross
Country competitions are pretty crazy and there is so much depth so I just want to be able to compete with the top guys in the not too distant future.

RT: Sam, all the best with achieving those goals and we look forward to hearing more from you over the years.

Sam: Thanks Runners Tribe and to everyone back home for your support.
