Jerry Bouma, a Canadian ex-pat who ran at Villanova from 1970-74 has recently published a great insider's account of the program at the peak of its prowess. Titled TOUCHING GREATNESS, FOREVER TOGETHER: THE VILLANOVA TRACK STORY, 1966-81, it chronicles the 16-year consecutive streak of Penn Relays DMR titles for the Villanova men. Bouma's narrative captures well the dynamics of the program, its leading personalities, the importance of the leadership of the upperclassmen (passed down from one "generation" to the next), and the coaching approach of Jumbo Elliot. Plenty of great anecdotes.

The Irish Times

For those of us of a certain age, drawn to moments of high sporting drama, there was one person who gave us more to shout about, more moments of nail-biting tension and, alas, more nights of gut-wrenching disappointment than anyone else.

Emotionally, we invested more in the rollercoaster of her fortunes than we did in those of Eamonn or Stephen or Seán or Pádraig. Maybe Roy came close, but then he had team-mates, and as many detractors as supporters.

Sonia.

Still instantly recognisable by her first name alone, Sonia O’Sullivan is probably the finest woman athlete Ireland has produced. An Olympic silver medallist, a world champion and twice a world cross-country champion, the gangly Cork woman with the devastating finishing kick was also no stranger to defeat. Twice, when fancied to win, she finished fourth in the Olympics and the World Championships, to the dismay of an expectant public at home.

The strong taint of suspicious drug use attaches itself to some of those who pushed the Irishwoman out of the medal positions on those far-off race days. Other Irish runners, such as Derval O’Rourke, have been awarded championship medals later after drug cheats were disqualified and placings changed.

Sonia is from an earlier era, before the technology was to test for drugs retrospectively, but she is relaxed about the issue. “I don’t dwell on it. So much time has gone by. It wouldn’t change anything if the placings were changed. You’d just get a medal in the post and put it in the drawer.”

She always knew there was something “not quite right” about some of her opponents, but nothing she could prove. “I think the drug-testing technology around the world has improved. There are fewer people cheating now. You can see it in the times and the performances; there’s no one doing ridiculous things, the way it used to be.”

More at home
She has lived in Australia for years now but still flinches when asked if it is her home. “Kinda, but I’ve always felt more at home here in Ireland,” she says when asked. She says her daughters, Ciara and Sophie, feel the same way, but admits this might change now they have started secondary school.

Despite having been retired for about seven years, she remains a familiar face through her work in promoting running and healthy living, and commenting on athletics for RTÉ. When the Olympic flame passed through Ireland on its way to the London games in 2012, it was Sonia who was chosen to carry it into St Stephen’s Green and light the cauldron.

Injury, most notably a recurrent problem with her Achilles tendon, has forced her running to take a back seat in recent years but she still keeps active by walking, cycling and swimming.

“I reached such heights in running; you can’t match that as you get older. So you have to go to other events and set new goals. I get a great sense of achievement from cycling 160km in a day.”

British runner Jo Pavey’s recent 10,000-metre win in the European Championships at the age of 40 and only 11 months after having her second child captured the headlines, but Sonia was doing something similar back in the 1990s. She won her Olympic silver medal in 2000, just 15 months after giving birth to her first daughter, Ciara. There wasn’t any great plan at the time, she recalls. “I ran for as long as I could during the pregnancy, then switched in the last weeks to the bike.

“After the birth, I’d go for long walks, then after a few weeks, I started training again with the slowest group at first. The rate of improvement each week was amazing.”

Having children should be no bar to the maintenance of fitness, she believes. “Keeping up your fitness before and after a birth should be normal.

“The important thing is to find your right level, to be aware of what your body is telling you.”

Coping with injury is another challenge for runners that Sonia is only too painfully aware of these days. “It’s a lot easier to accept injury now than when I competed in the Olympics. I’m less likely to go to extremes to fix things than I was. I’m quite happy to jump on the bike, go for a long walk or hit the gym if I’m unable to run.”

Fitness levels
Currently, Sonia is helping promote Athletics Ireland’s Fit4Life programme, which is aimed at recreational runners seeking to increase their level of fitness and achieve personal goals. In the programme, sponsored by GloHealth, runners are grouped by ability for training sessions and coached towards specific race challenges, such as a first 5k or 10-miler.
People push themselves and, hopefully, are surprised by what they achieve.”

Sonia’s second daughter, Sophie, has taken up where her mother left off by making it to the state cross-country team in Australia, while Ciara has no interest in running. As a parent, Sonia says she wants her children to be happy whatever they do. “I wouldn’t have any expectations, and I would never put any pressure on them to do something. But it can be harder for them; they might think I have an expectation.

“Basically, I think if you find something you enjoy doing, you have to do it. Like I did.”

Analysis:
Villanova’s three boys from Down Under guarantee that Coach Marcus O’Sullivan can book their flights to Terre Haute, a little earlier than most. Patrick Tiernan was 9th as a freshman, and his 13:31 5k on the track is indicative of what this guy from Toowoomba (Australia) can produce on the day. His projected low stick may even be as good as top three at the Big Race. He is that good. Sam McEntee (Perth, Australia) was a terrific 27th at last year’s race, and he has as good a set of wheels as anyone in the race with a 3:36 for 1500. Jordy WIlliamsz (Melbourne, Australia) is not likely to have the nightmare he had at last year’s bogfest race where he finished 205th. He is much better than that, so look for him to redeem himself this time around.

Solid senior Brian Basili finished 12th in last year’s Region race, and he has improved throughout his years at Villanova as indicated by his PR last year of 14:08 for 5k on the track. He will be the lone American in O’Sullivan’s top five. Canadian Robert Denault leaped on to the list of Villanova’s many top 1500 meter runners with a 3:41 last spring. Showing he can run longer, he was 9th in the Mid Atlantic Region cross meet last year.

So, does anybody want to race Villanova over 1500 meters? How about 10,000 meters on grass?

Maybe no on both counts.

A winner in Coach O’Sullivan and some very talented foreigners will make the Wildcats a team to be feared in November.

BChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08048630932291123672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4016153509286067146.post-10335401262029857562014-08-11T14:29:00.001-05:002014-08-11T14:31:05.077-05:00Tom Donnelly into USTFCCCA Coaches Hall of Fame

Here's the release today from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, naming former Villanova All-American Tom Donnelly as a 2014 inductee into its Coaches Hall of Fame
While Tom Donnelly of Haverford has said the impact a coach makes on a student-athlete is "maybe one percent," the long-running thread of successes his Haverford men’s track & field and cross country squads have achieved during his 40-year-and-counting career as the head coach of the Fords says otherwise.
Since taking over at the small liberal arts school of little more than 1,000 students in 1974, Donnelly has become one of the most influential distance coaches in the country. Even though numerous world-class athletes have trained under his tutelage over the years – including sub-3:50 milers Marcus O’Sullivan and Sydney Maree – Donnelly has remained loyal to the program he built in Haverford.
That program-building culminated in 2010 with his cross country team winning the school’s first-ever national team title, led by individual national champion Anders Hulleberg and five All-Americans. The team title is part of a streak of 29 consecutive team appearances at the NCAA Championships, and a overall total of 33 team appearances.
Hulleberg was the second national cross country champion Donnelly coached, along with Seamus McElligott in 1990, and his All-Americans were among 32 different men who have earned the honor in cross country during his tenure.
He has been equally as successful on the track as on the trails, with 66 men having earned outdoor All-America honors and 59 earning the award indoors – including 15 outdoor event champions and 10 indoor champions.
His teams have dominated at the conference level both indoors and out. Since the Centennial Conference was formed in 1994, Donnelly’s Fords have claimed 18 of 21 outdoor track & field team titles and 17 of 21 indoor team crowns.
Those victories were powered by the largest number of event champions in conference history. His men have combined for 106 event wins at the Centennial Conference Outdoor Championships, and 130 indoors.
Before beginning his legendary Haverford coaching career, he contributed to the track & field and cross country legacy of another historic Pennsylvania institution in Villanova. He was a member of a Wildcats program from 1966 through 1969 that won three-straight NCAA cross country team titles and another in track & field.BChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08048630932291123672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4016153509286067146.post-58472143848911104862014-08-01T08:19:00.000-05:002014-08-01T08:22:31.908-05:001998 in BudapestSonia O'Sullivan wins European Championship at 10,000m

Jen Rhines started running when she went out for spring track in 7th
grade. She competed in the 100 and 200 meter sprints, but gradually
increased her race distances each season. By the time she got to 9th
grade she was racing the 800 and 1500 meter runs. During those years
Jen was a three sport athlete. She’d play soccer in the fall,
basketball in the winter and run track in the spring.

Eventually Jen realized that running was going to be her best sport
so when she transferred from Phoenix to Liverpool High School in central
New York to start her sophomore year she joined the cross country team.
She quickly became one of New York’s top runners. In cross country,
Jen qualified for the Footlocker Cross Country Championships her junior
and senior years. Her senior year she was 5th at Footlocker. She was
the New York State Champion in the 1500 her junior and senior years.
She left Liverpool High School with still standing school records in the
1500 (4:31) and 3000 (9:56) meter runs.

With those credentials it isn’t surprising that Jen was recruited by
many colleges. However, it was the storied history of the Villanova
program that led her to the suburbs of Philadelphia to continue her
running. Her start at Villanova wasn’t what she envisioned. Her frosh
cross country campaign ended with a 98th place finish at the NCAA
championships. The team won but she didn’t contribute to the team score
and it bothered her…..a lot. She recognized the problem and made
changes. The following year she placed second then her junior year she
was the NCAA Cross Country Champion. While at Villanova Jen was a
five-time NCAA champion. Added to her cross country title is the
outdoor 5000 three consecutive years (1994-1996) and the indoor 5000 in
1995. Jen graduated with a degree in civil engineering in 1996.

To say that things got better for Jen after she left Villanova would
be an understatement. She went on to qualify for three Olympic Games.
In 2000, she qualified in the 10,000 then the marathon in 2004. In
2008, she qualified in the 5000 in an epic battle against Shalane
Flanagan and Kara Goucher in what some say was the greatest women’s
Olympic Trials 5000 race ever. Jen’s professional career includes her
breaking the elusive 15-minute barrier in the 5,000. Her 14:54.29 makes
her the 5th fastest American performer ever at that distance. Her
31:17.31 10,000 makes her the 9th fastest American performer ever. Her
3000 best of 8:35.03 makes her the 6th fastest American performer ever.
It’s very difficult to make one Olympic team. It’s rare to make a
second. It puts you in a very elite group of people when you make three
Olympic teams. In 2011, 15 years after graduating from college, Jen
finished 9th at the World Championships in the 10,000 meters. Her
success and longevity in this sport is amazing and the envy of other
elite athletes. She is truly one of America’s greatest distance runners
ever.
Jen resides in Boston, MA with her husband Terrance Mahon and two
pugs, Bella and Star. Her husband Terrance is an accomplished athlete
and coach. He was an All-American at Villanova, has run 2:13:02 for the
marathon and qualified for the Olympic Trials in both the 10,000 and
marathon. Terrance is also one of the foremost coaches in the United
States. He was head coach of the Mammoth Track Club where he coached
such greats as Deena Kastor, Ryan Hall, Morgan Uceny, Anna (Willard)
Pierce, Amy Hastings and of course his wife. In 2013 he was recruited
by the Boston Athletic Association to start and coach their high
performance athlete group.

Sam Ellison

Anchor - Villanova University

"Unbelievable. You can't really find words for it. This
environment is very special. You can't really get a crowd like this
anywhere else in the world, whether it's the Olympics, World
Championships; there's nothing like the Penn Relays. They're kind of the
Super Bowl of our sport."
"Our coaches always tell us 'run for the vest,' run for the jersey. In
our field house we just have a hallway full of wheels, and we take it
very seriously. For us to have all of the talent we have on this team,
it's kind of weird that we haven't won one yet, but sometimes it just
takes the right day, the right time, the right guys, to come together."
"Certainly we were all trying to be like Emily (Lipari) today. She's an
unbelievable athlete. We're certainly proud of her."
"You just want to be a part of it and bring one home for your team, your
coaches, and your school."
As the Irish indoor athletics season swing into action at the new Athlone IT facility, it is worth recalling a memorable indoor performance by a Cork athlete which took place 40 years ago last weekend.

Treading the boards at the Knights of Columbus Games in Uniondale, New York, on that Saturday evening of January 12, 1974, John Hartnett from Ballyhooly ran the fifth fastest time on record for the two miles distance when covering the 22 indoor laps in a time of 8:26.6.

He finished almost eight seconds ahead of Grant McLaren from Canada (8:34.4) with another Irishman, Neil Cusack, third in 8:37.2. Hartnett’s time was just two seconds slower than the American record at the time which was held by the legendary Steve Prefontaine who would tragically die the following year in a car accident at the age of 24.

The two-mile was one of the most popular races on the indoor circuit back then and although the distance is rarely run nowadays, the time by the Corkman is the equivalent of around 7:50 for 3,000 metres.

It is worth noting that the fastest 3,000m by an Irishman last year, indoors or outdoors, was the 7:50.40 by Ciaran Ó’Lionáird which won him the bronze medal at the European Indoors in Gothenburg.

John Hartnett at the time was on scholarship at Villanova University and had just returned to the US two days previously after spending Christmas at home in Ballyhooly.

Showing the tremendous form he was in at the time, the Sunday before he left he had established a new course record for the Oman Cup road race in the Phoenix Park with a time of 9:07.4.

Hartnett’s amazing form on the boards of North America continued the following month at the Maple Leaf Indoor Games in Toronto where, before a packed attendance of over 16,000 fans, he ran the first sub-four-minute indoor mile witnessed in Canada.

His 3:59.6 was achieved ahead of a glittering field which included the 1972 Olympic 1500m champion Pekka Vasala of Finland and John Walker from New Zealand, who would win Olympic gold two years later in that event.

The previous year Hartnett had broken Ronnie Delany’s Irish mile record with a time of 3:54.7 and he would add the Irish 1500m to that when recording 3:38.1 at Bakersfield in California later in the summer of 1974.

He then returned home and on a magical night at the Cork City Sports at the Mardyke he ran a 3:56.3 mile, one of the fastest times ever achieved on grass.

For the past number of years a 10km road race has been held in John Hartnett’s honour in his native Ballyhooly. A year ago last August, the village’s most famous son – who now resides in New Jersey - was on hand to start the race and present the prizes, as well as reminisce with his many admirers on a remarkable and honour-laden running career.BChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08048630932291123672noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4016153509286067146.post-46147199235191058742013-12-22T08:00:00.000-06:002013-12-22T08:59:41.579-06:00Happy Birthday, Marcus O'Sullivan

Today is the 52nd birthday of the great Marcus O'Sullivan. Villanova's head coach since 1998, Marcus rose from modest means in Cork, Ireland to conquer the world. He won three world indoor championships over 1500 meters: in 1987 in Indianapolis, 1989 in Budapest, and 1993 in Toronto; in the 1987 and 1989 wins, he set championship records. He represented Ireland in four Olympic Games (1984, 1988, 1992, and 1996) at both 800 and 1500 meters. He set (or was a part of) three world records: he ran 3:35.4 on February 10, 1989 to set a world indoor mark over 1500 meters. In 1985 he ran the fastest leg of Ireland's still standing 4 x mile world record of 15:49.08. Finally, as a 40-year-old master's runner, Marcus ran the 3000 meters in 8:09.13 on February 26, 2002 at Penn State to set a master's world record at that distance. O'Sullivan won the prestigious Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games five times. While running for Villanova, Marcus won 10 Big East and 4 IC4A titles and 6 Penn Relays Championships of America (see photo from the 1984 Penn Relays 4 x 1500). He was the NCAA runner-up (to Joachim Cruz) over 1500 meters.

Marcus has coached eleven Villanova men under the 4:00 mile / 3:42.2 1500 barrier: Adrian Blincoe, Ryan Hayden, Tom Parlapiano, Jason Jabaut, Bobby Curtis, Mike Kerrigan, Matt Gibney, Carl Mackenzie, Sam McEntee, Jordy Williamsz, and Rob Denault. Marcus himself ran 101 sub-4:00 miles in his illustrious career (the third highest total in history).

Off the track, Marcus has earned his MBA degree and a CPA. A testament to the qualities of this man is the fact that long-time American Record holder at 5000 meters Bob Kennedy, who Marcus helped mentor toward the end of his competitive career, named his first son after Marcus.BChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08048630932291123672noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4016153509286067146.post-36820466336023755612013-12-16T09:25:00.001-06:002013-12-16T09:25:53.565-06:00Terrence Mahon Back in the US; Heading BAA HP Elite

The purpose of the BAA high-performance elite team is to dig in and focus on creating a national-caliber and, hopefully, a world-class-caliber team that lives and trains in the Boston area.

One of the most important factors that came into my decision to take on this new coaching role with the BAA was the Marathon bombings in April. It was an event that shook up every runner I know. I hope that we as a team can be a part of the healing process as we look to set up a foundation for years to come. It will be a foundation more than just of brick and mortar, but one of the human spirit.

I’m open to working with any athlete, male or female, from the 800 [meter] up toward the Marathon. If we have the opportunity to bring in a kid who’s a phenomenal 800 runner or a great steeplechaser, we’re not going to say “No” because he or she runs a specific event that doesn’t necessarily lead toward the Marathon.

With Boston, you don’t have altitude, but you have phenomenal places to run. You’ve got a very good infrastructure in terms of all the indoor and outdoor tracks and medical facilities and a phenomenal running community that’s hugely supportive of its own. Probably the biggest negative is dealing with the winter.

I look at what athletes bring to the table — their goals, their needs, their strengths and weaknesses. It’s the very opposite of a cookie-cutter approach. At the same time, I understand there is a powerful dynamic in training like-minded individuals and the camaraderie of a good team. It’s blending both of those worlds.

Every athlete that we’re going to recruit will be a true professional athlete, meaning that this is the sole thing he or she does. So, it’s not for someone who’s working 40 hours a week but still wants to try to make the Olympic trials. Our goal all along has been officially opening our doors January 1 with a handful of athletes who are already professional.
The three-time Olympian, who won the 5000 meter gold medal at the World Championships in 1983, said while the traditional approach to physical education was that children were instructed to run, jump, throw and catch, they were not shown the basics to do it properly.

He said 'Points for Life' was not about developing elite athletes, but getting the very basics of physical education right so that children were more likely to pursue a lifelong interest in sport and physical activity.

"The programme will teach the children what physical literacy is all about, not just about its value in the short term, but as something that has lifelong benefits," he added.
1) Positives about college in the USA (training in a team, coaches, funding, free college, etc.)

Well obviously, for starters, the major advantage of being on a sports
scholarship in the US is that you are able to get a free education while
pursuing some form of career in athletics. Secondly, I think the
emphasis that is behind your chosen sport is very important. For
example, we have training six days a week where we have to meet with the
coach or as a team, while the seventh day (usually Saturday) is where
you can go for a little jog on your own. In a sense, it is likely high
school, where the teachers know if you are not showing up to class.
Marcus (our coach) knows when we aren’t at training, and obviously he is
going to be curious as to why not. So I guess the concept of having
that extra incentive to be there every day and put your best foot
forward is a major positive to come out of my move to the States.
Lastly, the university set-up is very different to that back home in
Australia. When I was at the University of Queensland last year, my
classes consisted of over 200-300 student lectures that were immensely
overwhelming, and also class participation and attendance was not noted
by the professors. At Villanova, my biggest class so far has had 30
students, and attendance policies are implied. This has been much better
for me personally as the professors are able to explain certain
concepts to you face-to-face without too much hassle.

2) Negatives about college in the USA

In all honesty, there aren’t too many negatives to connect with the US
college system. Being a long way from home has been relatively tough for
me, but keeping in regular contact with my family over the internet
isn’t so bad. We don’t get live coverage of the Ashes or the Rugby which
is annoying, but understandable, so in reality I haven’t got too much
to complain about at all!

3) Would you recommend it to people interested?

Yes. I stand by my word in saying that making the move from Australia to
the US for my university degree was one of the best decisions I have
ever made. When you add up all of the pros and cons, you’ll understand
why; the pros significantly outweigh the cons. There are a few Aussies
over in the states at the moment that I have been in contact with, and I
know that they have loved their time over here, so I would definitely
recommend it to anyone considering making the move.

4) Advantages over staying in Australia

I named a few before, but one I didn’t mention was the level of
competition in the college system. I know that in Australia the biggest
university event on the calendar for athletics is the Australian
University Games, where the main competition aspect is saved for the
bars and clubs each night. The NCAA Championships are the biggest events
on the sporting calendar in the US for many people, and the level of
competition at which you are competing is almost at a world championship
level. Last year in the 1500m final, a guy who has run 3:36 (yes, his
name is Sam McEntee) finished 7th of 8th in the race. Now if that
doesn’t scream that the NCAA Championships are one of the most
competitive events in the world of University athletics, I don’t know
what does. So, to put it simply, if you want to combine a university
degree and a successful athletics career, I would seriously consider
coming over to the US.

5) Thoughts on the lack of funding in Australia

This is one of the major reasons why the AUG is what it is. Universities
aren’t paying money for their top class track and field athletes to
compete for them, so why should the athletes want to compete at a high
level? Training must be done independently, and around whatever uni
timetable is thrown at them. I know it is very difficult to build a
system such as the NCAA has done over in North America, but it doesn’t
even seem like Australian University Sport is trying to keep athletes
such as myself, Sam, and Jordy Williamsz in Australia, which is a real
shame for the growth of our sport in the nation, and why we are losing
so many people to the US College system.

6) Education level and prospects after career

I’m currently studying a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Mathematics,
knowing that the education I am getting is at a very high level.
Villanova is known for leaving its graduates with a very high level of
education, but then again many of the US colleges in the NCAA do, so you
generally know that in going to college in the US, you are going to
come out of it with a high quality degree. What I am going to do with
myself outside of running and college I have not given a whole lot of
thought to yet. I still have three years to figure that one out, so I
think I will just keep riding this train that I’m on, and get off at the
right stop when it is necessary.

7) General idea of training. Talk in as much detail as you like here. Can give a full program or just an overview

The major mix-up for me with the training was that instead of doing a
lot of 100% work, my training now consists of heart-rate based,
controlled efforts. This cross country season, we did a lot of zone 2
and threshold work, touching base with some of the body’s systems that
have been left alone for me in the past. To summarize, I wasn’t feeling
as tired as I was in 2012. At the end of a session, I wouldn’t be on my
haunches gasping for air. Instead, I’d be jogging back up to start to
get my warm-gear on before hitting the showers. I think this was the
major reason why I had a successful cross country season this year, and I
am hoping to carry this momentum forward into my first indoor season in
2014.

8) NCAA Nationals experience. The build up (season before it), week
before it, day of the race, during the race, after the race, etc.

For the majority of the season, our focus was on our conference
championships, where were three weeks before Nationals, so in all the
summer training and the opening few races, Nationals was not even on my
mind.

The week before Nationals was Regionals, where we had to finish top two
as a team to qualify, so emotions and stress levels were pretty high.
This was the first time where our focus had turned solely to Nationals,
where our result at this race would determine our fate for Nationals. We
got through it comfortably, winning the meet by a large margin; however
we all knew that we wanted to end our season on an even better note:
finishing top ten at Nationals. Throughout the week leading up to the
race, I was pretty calm, I hadn’t ever competed in a race like this
before, so I had no idea what to expect. For this reason, I said to
myself “there’s no point getting all tangled up over a race that you
cannot even picture in your head”.

When the day of the race came though, I was really nervous. Showing up
to the course and seeing all of these guys that I had heard so much
about was very intimidating. So I just sat down in our designated tent,
plugged in my earphones, and listened to ‘Mr November’ by The National
on repeat until it was time to warm-up. On the warm-up, I began to take
in everything that was around me: the below freezing temperature, the
mud-bath of a course, and the idea of running 10km in those conditions.
However, when my head was down on that start-line, all of that seemed to
disappear.

Within the first two kilometres of the race, a group of about 15 runners
had separated themselves from the remainder of us, leaving me to lead
the chase pack. Going through the halfway marker, I felt very
comfortable, and was still at the forefront of this enormous pack. Over
the course of the second lap (of two), we began to pick up some
stragglers from that lead group, and with two kilometres remaining, I
found myself in a position where I could potentially finish in the top
ten. One kilometer to go, and I started to make a move off the front of
the pack (which had simmered down by now) with a few other runners to
contend for this top ten spot. Turning into the homestretch, I was in
11th place, and needed to pick up one other runner over the never-ending
400m home-stretch. Clicking into the highest gear I could, I passed a
couple of guys to finish in ninth place.

My emotions after the race were mixed, because although I had exceeded
all of my personal expectations going into the race, we had finished
17th as a team, which was not exactly what we had come to achieve.
Within an hour of the finish, all of the boys seemed to have regained
their spirits and were already looking forward to next year’s race where
the goal will once again be a top ten finish.

For now, I am just looking forward to heading home over Christmas and spending some time with my family and friends back in Oz.

After bonking over the final 10K at the 2011 New York City marathon, Bobby Curtis today demonstrated that he's got a good methodology for running even splits over the marathon distance. Curtis finished a very solid 10th at the 67th Fukuoka International Marathon in 2:13:24 (a 3:20 PR) after running splits of 1:06:04 and 1:07:20 (compare that to his debut marathon at the 2011 NYC marathon: splits of 1:05:23 + 1:11:21 = 2:16.44).
Interestingly, Ireland's (and the University of Arkansas') Alistair Cragg made his marathon debut today at Fukuoka and he succumbed to a familiar collapse over the final stages of the race. Cragg is a superb talent to be sure (witness a 5000 meter PR of 13:03.53 and a 1:00:49 PR over the half-marathon distance), but debut marathons are tricky business (as Curtis knows from 2011 in New York). Cragg led Curtis by almost 2 minutes at the halfway mark today, but finished 10 minutes behind Curtis at the end.

Capping a great freshman campaign, Tiernan was 9th overall

On a cold and blustery day in Terre Haute, senior Emily Lipari (5th overall) and freshman Patrick Tiernan (9th overall) led the Villanova women and men to top-20 team finishes at the NCAA Cross Country championships. Lipari and Tiernan each earned All-American honors, as did Sam McEntee who came 27th overall. Senior Nicky Akande missed All-American status by a mere 3 spots, finishing 43rd overall. The Villanova men went 8-22-116-130-139-(154)- (170) to finish with 415 places, while the Villanova women finished with 397 places by virtue of a 3-27-65-122-180-(211)-(212) showing. Colorado won the men's team competition, while Providence took the women's team title.

Comparing the 2012 and 2013 races, both held on the same course, shows how much tougher conditions were this year. For example, Emily Lipari actually ran 5 seconds faster (20:05.6) in 2012, when she finished 25th, than she did this year (20:10.8) when she came 5th overall. Likewise, Nicky Akande's 20:46.5 was good for 95th last year, while her 20:47.9 resulted in 43rd place this year. Overall, only Sam McEntee (by 30 seconds), Brian Basili (by 51 seconds), and Stephanie Schappert (by 3 seconds) ran the course faster in the 2013 championship race than they did in 2012. Yet, slower times this year generally resulted in better place results. Sydney Harris, for example, improved 56 places over 2012, despite running the course 6 seconds slower. So, conditions were difficult this year. Big improvements in place were garnered over 2012 by McEntee (from 150th in 2012 to 27th this year), Basili (from 234th to 144th), Lipari (from 25th to 5th), Akande (from 95th to 43rd), Schappert (from 173rd to 91st), and Harris (from 209th to 153rd).
The Villanova Wildcats started the 2013 cross country season ranked No. 27 and this week jumped to No. 14 after winning both the Big East Conference and Mid-Atlantic regional. Keys to the Wildcats’ success have been tight pack running and the precocious performances of freshman Patrick Tiernan, who won individual titles at both championship meets.

Tiernan, 19, arrived at Villanova last January from Toowoomba, Australia and sat out the indoor and outdoor track seasons. His collegiate career began quietly, as he was third man on the team with a ninth-place overall finish at the Big Five Invitational in Philadelphia. He has been the low stick in all five subsequent races, but Villanova Coach Marcus O’Sullivan kept his team out of Pre-Nationals and the Wisconsin Invitational, so Tiernan’s abilities went unnoticed. A trip to Fayetteville, Ark., in mid-October gave a hint of things to come, as Tiernan ran to a fourth-place finish at the Chile Pepper Festival 8K behind All-Americans Kennedy Kithuka of Texas Tech and Arkansas teammates Kemoy Campbell and Stanley Kebenei. The Wildcats also impressed that day, scoring a close 31-44 second-place finish behind the Razorbacks. But few would have predicted Villanova’s 34-point low score at the Mid-Atlantic regional, which they accomplished by putting five among the first 12 finishers. Now, with nationals at hand and the team peaking perfectly, Tiernan and his teammates have high ambitions for Terre Haute.

Running Times: Congratulations to you on the Mid-Atlantic region victory, and to your team on taking the title. I’m wondering whether you’ve seen the great photo of you racing alongside several teammates, with a big grin on your face. Any recollection of what was going on?

Patrick Tiernan: I think it was right at the mile marker, and I just remember we were running through a huge crowd of people, five or six hundred just lining the track there, and I just couldn’t believe it. I’d never been in a race with that many spectators or people who were really into cross country like that. So I was overwhelmed by the situation, I guess. There wasn’t anything said or anything like that, I just couldn’t wipe the grin off my face at the time. It was a great moment for me and I’ll always remember it. It was special.

RT: If you think back to August at the beginning of preparations for the season, what was the outlook on how things would shape up for the team?

PT: Nationals was always a goal, but I think for us as a team, winning Big East was probably our biggest goal of the year. We wanted to win that because I know the boys said they had a pretty rough race there last year, finishing fifth or something, so I think we were all pretty determined to do well there. And we figured if we could do well there we’d just try to carry our form on and try to do well at nationals. And now we definitely see ourselves as a big threat to other teams, potentially a top 10 team if we all perform at our full potential. We’ll just see how we go, we’ll rock up on the day and give it one hundred percent and that’s all anyone can ask for.

RT: Villanova has surprised a lot of people this month, in part because you didn’t run some of the biggest meets during the regular season—you weren’t at Pre-Nationals or Wisconsin, for example. But were you guys and Coach O’Sullivan confident all along that you had the capability to do well in the late season, and what point did you feel it could all come together like this?

PT: It was Marcus’s plan for the season to keep pretty low-key until the post-season races. And we had a pretty good hit out there at Arkansas, which was our first big race of the year. But I think we worked into it well. Each race we were prepared for by the training we were doing and our training was getting gradually quicker as the season was going along. And I think now we’ve tapped into some systems that they didn’t get into last year as far as aerobic and anaerobic capacity goes. That was a big factor for us and it’s worked out really well and hopefully it pays off in the last race.

RT: You’ve won three races and finished among the top few in three others. Have the results surprised you or did you come in after a really good summer and know you were going to be one of the top guys?

PT: I guess you’re always going to be surprised when you get a win in any sort of race, but I knew I was fit, I knew I had a good base built up during the summer. And I guess just doing a few things differently with a more serious set-up over here rather than back home was a big thing for me this semester. I’ve raced as I usually do, no surprises as far as my tactics have gone whatsoever. But I think definitely the change-up in training for me was a big thing and it’s been probably my best season of running to date. Yeah, it’s definitely been a surprise for me but I think I can get out one more good race for the season.

RT: Was racing the full 10K distance at regionals a lot more challenging than the previous 4-mile and 8K races?

PT: Yeah, it was. I’d done a couple of 10Ks back home but not cross country, they were sort of flat races. So it was a big step up for me but it’s what we’ve been training for the whole season, so we were ready for it.

RT: You’ve got such a deep team, all seven racing so closely together in races. Obviously at nationals it’s going to be a big, talented field and high intensity so do you expect to still work together as a team?

PT: Yeah, I feel we can definitely work off each other in the race. I know that’s what a lot of other teams do when it comes to big races like this. You’ve got to know where you’re at and the only way to do that is to work off the teammates you’ve been training with all year. So I think that will definitely come into play on the day, but honestly I’m not 100 percent sure what the plan is for the race.

RT: Individually what are you looking to do in Terre Haute?

PT: Ideally I’d like to get in the top 25, but we’ll see how the race goes. If I can get in the top 25 anything better is just a bonus.

RT: And as a team you’re saying top ten is the goal, right?

PT: As a team top ten, definitely. That’s definitely our potential and now it’s just a matter of us applying it on the day.BChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08048630932291123672noreply@blogger.com1
