McEntee Vaults to NCAA # 3 with 3:36.81 at Swarthmore 1500

Villanova sophomore Sam McEntee had a big 1500 meter breakthrough last evening at the Jim Tuppeny Last Chance meet at Swarthmore, running 3:36.81 (equivalent to about a 3:54.6 mile), placing him in the #3 spot on this 2012 NCAA performance list. In coming fourth in a very deep and talented field, McEntee bettered several post-collegiate professional runners. The race was paced by Olympic 1500 meter silver medalist Nick Willis (NZ) and included international competitors such as Australia's Jordy Williamsz (who recently committed to run for Villanova come fall 2012), Canada's Nate Brannen, New Zealand's Hamish Carson, among others. The race was won surprisingly by Columbia's Kyle Merber in a stunning 7-second PR and a new NCAA collegiate record time of 3:35.59. On this drizzly night, 13 of the 14 competitors broke the metric equivalent of the 4:00 mile.
