After bonking over the final 10K at the 2011 New York City marathon, Bobby Curtis today demonstrated that he's got a good methodology for running even splits over the marathon distance. Curtis finished a very solid 10th at the 67th Fukuoka International Marathon in 2:13:24 (a 3:20 PR) after running splits of 1:06:04 and 1:07:20 (compare that to his debut marathon at the 2011 NYC marathon: splits of 1:05:23 + 1:11:21 = 2:16.44).

Interestingly, Ireland's (and the University of Arkansas') Alistair Cragg made his marathon debut today at Fukuoka and he succumbed to a familiar collapse over the final stages of the race. Cragg is a superb talent to be sure (witness a 5000 meter PR of 13:03.53 and a 1:00:49 PR over the half-marathon distance), but debut marathons are tricky business (as Curtis knows from 2011 in New York). Cragg led Curtis by almost 2 minutes at the halfway mark today, but finished 10 minutes behind Curtis at the end. Here are Cragg's 5K splits: notice that Cragg covered the final 12.2 kilometers in 50:09, compared to 39:24 for Curtis):
