Reid & Ward Push VU Women at Big East Championships


Sheila Reid won conference championships at both 1500 and 5000 meters Sunday on the final day of the Big East championships. The wins represent the 10th and 11th conference titles in her illustrious Villanova career and tallied 20 of the Villanova women's 79.5 team points. In both races Reid defeated Georgetown's Emily Enfeld, a national-class runner in her own right.

Shericka Ward collected two second-place finishes on Sunday, in the 200 meter dash and 100 meter hurdles. The versatile sprinter thereby added 16 points to the team's total.

The Villanova quartet of Nicoy Hines, Carlton Bowers, Christopher Kearney, and Sam Ellison took second place in the men's 4 x 400 meters in 3:09.89.

In other events, Villanova came third in the men's 800 meters (Matt Gibney: 1:48.66), 5000 meters (Mathew Mildnehall: 14:17.68), and in the 4 x 800 (Brian Tetreault, Matt Wikler, Carl Mackenzie, and Matt Gibney).

Third place Villanova women included Ali Smith in the 5000 meters (16:20.10) and the 4 x 800 team of Kelly McElroy, Emily Lipari, Ariann Neutts, and Nicky Akande (8:44.92).

Fourth place finishers were acieved by Frank Anuszewski in the hammer throw (55.83 meters), Robert Sainvil in the triple jump (15.22 meters), and Brian Long in the 5000 meters (14:19.04).
