Great Villanova Moments at the NCAA Championships: #8

June 1, 1994: Carole Zajac Dominates Women's NCAA 10,000 Final

Carole Zajac won 4 NCAA individual titles during her Villanova career (1990-1994). She won the individual cross country championship twice, in 1992 and 1993, and on the track she won twice at 10,000 meters (1993 and 1994). In addition to her four national titles, Zajac was a national runner-up twice (in XC to Sonia O'Sullivan in 1991, and in track to Jen Rhines at 5000 meters in 1994). Zajac was a member of four consecutive cross country team champions. In Boise, Idaho, in 1994 Zajac dominated the 10,000 field (which included future Olympic marathon medalist and American Record holder Deena Drossin (now Kastor). Her margin of victory was an impressive 39 seconds over the second-place finisher (and 1:16 over 4th place Drossin). In 2005, the NCAA selected Zajac as the Most Outstanding Student-Athlete in the first 25 years of NCAA Women's Cross Country (she finished 14th overall as a frosh, then 2nd, 1st, and 1st in her final three years).
