After laying low over the first weeks of the cross country season, the #26 ranked Villanova men (36 places) today surprised #19 Providence (49 places) to win the Big East conference title. Super frosh Patrick Tiernan made a statement by winning the individual title in 23:51 over the 8K course in Somers, Wisconsin -- the first by a Villanova man since Bobby Curtis took the crown in 2007. Butler was third (61 places) and Georgetown (76 places) finished fourth in the team competition.
The men showed great depth today, finishing 1-4-6-11-14-(15)-(16), with a 50 second spread from 1-5 (only 1:04 from 1-7!). Sam McEntee, who ran at team #1 last year but who started a bit slowly this season, reasserted himself and came 4th overall, in 24:17. Rob Denault was next, in 6th place, two strides and one second behind McEntee. Jordy Williamsz was Villanova's #4 today in 11th overall (24:38), and Brian Basili closed out Villanova's scorers by finishing a strong 14th, 7 seconds back of Williamsz. Showing off the squad's great depth, Alex Tully and Harry Warnick finished 15th and 16th. Villanova's #7 (Warnick) came home 6 seconds ahead of Providence's #5. Encouraging news for the future: frosh Kevin Corbusier (Villanova's #8) came 21st overall, and Robert Hurlbut (Villanova's #9), a sophomore, was 24th. Nine Villanova finishers among the top 24 overall. Further encouraging news: all but Alex Tully, a senior, return next year. Last year's Big East runner-up, Providence's Irishman Shane Quinn, was beaten back into 12th place today as Villanova's Tiernan broke the field to win by fully 12 seconds over Butler's Tom Kerr.
