The oppressive heat made Friday night not the best for running.

But the opportunity to remember one of their own brought the Island running community out in strong numbers for the second annual Daniel Kelley Twilight Mile at St. Joseph by-the-Sea HS.

The mile races are held in honor of Kelley, the former Sea athlete and coach who died in January 2010 after being struck by an automobile during a training run.

Dan Lewis and Victoria Pontecorvo were the big race winners, utilizing similar strategies.

On a brutally hot day, with temperatures hovering around the triple digit mark, any thought of a fast early pace was out of the question.

Instead, the races turned into tactical affairs, with the winners turning on the burners during frantic last laps.

Pontecorvo, the Rutgers University junior, easily defended her title, running away from ex-Wagner College runner Samantha Snukis on the last lap to win in 5 minutes, 18.4 seconds.

Lewis, the former Monsignor Farrell and Villanova captain, pulled away from current Farrell junior Dan Galford on the last lap to win in 4:24.4.

Nearly 500 athletes competed in 12 races, with the Sea alumni races being taken by Alex Civitano and Rose Petrizzo.

In a touching tribute, the stands emptied after the last race, and everyone took a lap of honor around the track in memory of Kelley.
