McEntee Advances, Ward Vanquished at NCAA Nationals

Villanova's Sam McEntee after qualifying for 1500 meter final

In day 2 of NCAA Nationals, Sam McEntee finished 5th in his closely packed 1500 heat (the top 5 finishers all came home within 1/6th of a second). He ran 3:42.73 (equivalent to a 4:00.5 mile) and advanced to the 12-man final on Saturday morning. This will be McEntee's second consecutive NCAA 1500 meter final, following as it does his 4th place finish at indoor nationals in March. The top 5 qualifiers from each heat, plus the next two fastest times, advanced to the final. Both qualifiers on time were from heat 1, the faster of the two heats. Surprisingly, the newly minted American Collegiate record holder, Kyle Merber of Columbia, ran poorly and failed to advance to the final.

The news was not as good for Shericka Ward. In her 100 meter hurdle semi-final heat, Ward ran a career PR of 13.09, but finished fourth and failed to advance to the final. Only the top two from each of the three heats, plus the next two fastest times, advanced to the 8-person final. Her time of was .04 seconds slower than the final qualifier, as Ward finished 10th in the NCAA.

Here are the merged results for each event.
