VILLANOVA, Pa. - The combination of success in athletic competition as well as academically has once again led to a prestigious honor for senior middle distance runner Sheila Reid (Newmarket, Ont.), who was named a first team Capital One Academic All-District selection last week. Reid now moves on to a national ballot in consideration for Capital One Academic All-America honors.

This is the second straight year that Reid has received first team all-district honors. She was a first team Capital One Academic All-American in 2011 and continues to perform at just as a high a level in the classroom as she does on the track. Reid is a double major in English and Communications with a 3.39 cumulative grade-point average.

Results from competition in both cross country and track & field are taken into account for the Capital One Academic All-District teams, which require a student-athlete to have a minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA in order to be nominated. During the 2011-12 academic year Reid has continued to pile up athletic accomplishments at a remarkable rate.

Last fall Reid won her second straight individual national championship in cross country and led Villanova to a third place finish, marking three straight years that the Wildcats have made the awards podium. Reid was also the individual champion at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional and the BIG EAST Championships; both titles were her third in a row at those meets.

In outdoor competition this spring Reid made headlines when she anchored Villanova to a Championship of America title at the Penn Relays, running the final leg of the distance medley relay and leading the Wildcats to their 30th championship all-time at the world famous Penn meet. She has since qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 5000 meters after coming in third in the national semifinal race at the NCAA East Regional last month.

Following the NCAA Cross Country Championships in the fall Reid was selected as the National Student-Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). It is the second straight year that she has won the award and she was also voted the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women's Cross Country Performer of the Year.

Reid was also chosen as a first team recipient of the Academic Momentum Award, given by The Scholar Baller Program in conjunction with the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS). The purpose of the award, which encompasses all sports, is to recognize those student-athletes whose have made an impact through their academic performances on his or her classmates, teammates, academic advisors and professors.
