Villanova had runners competing in five different events at elite meet

RALEIGH, N.C. - Villanova had a total of 13 athletes competing this weekend at the Raleigh Relays on the Paul H. Derr Track and the Wildcats received strong efforts from their middle distance group in the top sections of the 800 meters and the 1500 meters. In all Villanova entered five different events over two days at the elite meet.

Junior Nicky Akande (Lawrenceville, Ga.) won the invitational section of the 800 meters with a time of 2:06.42 and the Wildcats accounted for five of the first six runners across the finish line. Akande narrowly beat freshman Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) at the finish line, as Piccirillo crossed the finish line in 2:06.62. The other members of the top five for Villanova included sophomore Stephanie Schappert (Delray Beach, Fla.) in fourth place (2:07.81), freshman Kelsey Margey (Huntington, N.Y.) in fifth place (2:07.93) and junior Emily Lipari (Greenvale, N.Y.) in sixth place (2:08.16).

Piccirillo and Schappert each registered new personal best times in both the 800 meters and the 1500 meters. Lipari won Section I of the 1500 meters in 4:20.08 and was followed by Akande in fourth place (4:20.95), while Schappert (4:21.20) and Piccirillo (4:21.79) were fifth and sixth, respectively. Margey finished in eighth place with a personal best time of 4:22.54 and senior Summer Cook (Thornton, Colo.) placed 13th with a time of 4:26.17. Cook established a new personal best in the 1500 meters for the second straight week, following up on her efforts at the Philadelphia College Classic.

Two other personal best times were recorded by the Wildcats at the meet. Senior Shannon Browne (Staten Island, N.Y.) came in 14th in Section II of the 1500 meters and had a time of 4:33.73. Sophomore Faith Dismuke (Passaic, N.J.) ran the 400 meter hurdles with a career best time of 1:00.43 and finished fourth out of 67 entries in the process.
